Tribal Relations

One of the best things I’ve been part of is building a strong working relationship with the Confederated Tribes of Siletz. Their ancestors were the First Peoples to occupy this land. Their status as a sovereign government was recognized by the U.S. Supreme Court in the nineteenth century.

In 2005, a series of meetings between our Board of Commissioners and the Tribal Council forged the foundation for a strong working relationship that has grown and deepened in all the years since. We recognize that we are both serving the same people and that ongoing communication and mutual respect are the keys to positive results.

The tribe makes a yearly donation to support county services, which is greatly appreciated in times of fiscal limitations. Our county-tribal relationship is looked at as a positive model both in Oregon and nationally.
